After a temporary halt due to non-availability of sweeper, state-level Intermediate Reference Laboratory (IRL) has resumed its critical operations for tuberculosis (TB) culture and drug sensitivity testing.

The disruption was caused by the absence of a sweeper, essential for maintaining hygiene after handling infectious sputum samples.

The Tribune in its Saturday edition highlighted the issue that the shortage of sweeper had “forced” the laboratory authorities to suspend testing. After the issue came into the notice of the authorities, a sweeper was deployed on deputation basis.

“We have started the testing of samples, which have been lying here for the past four days. On Saturday, we processed around 200 samples. We will work on Sunday to clear the backlog,” said Dr Ravi, Additional Senior Medical Officer and Microbiologist at IRL.

The IRL serves as a vital state-level centre for the testing and diagnosis of TB. The halt in testing has raised concern among health professionals and patients as timely diagnosis is crucial for effective TB treatment and control.

This laboratory has two sanctioned posts of sweeper, but both are lying vacant. A sweeper has been deputed here from the District Civil Hospital by the Civil Surgeon’s office, but was withdrawn last week, forcing the authorities to stop the testing of samples.
