The third PNG-based crematorium has been made functional near Tigaon village here.

Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma said it had been built at a cost of Rs 70 lakh and would enable cremation in a better and safe manner.

Sources said some of the wood-operated crematoriums had been faced a shortage of space as well as wood in view of a surge in Covid fatalities.

Several bereaved families were forced to perform the cremation of Covid victims in the parking area of a crematorium of the NIT last month, which led to a protest among local residents.

An MC employee said the average number of cremations in the city had been between 35 and 45, but official figures were less.

Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Faridabad, F Garima Mittal, said the fourth PNG crematorium would soon come up under the CSR project.
