Challans worth Rs 18 crore were issued for traffic rules violations in the district this year.

SP Chander Mohan said a total of 1,22,139 vehicle owners had been penalised in the district since January 1. As many as 2,066 vehicles were impounded during this period. As many as 94,220 challans were issued for wrong-lane driving, 10,561 for triple riding, 11, 461 for wrong parking, 616 for using cracker sounds on motorcycles, 766 for using black films, 3, 321 for driving vehicle without number plate, 142 for drunken driving and 1,938 for commuting on two wheelers without wearing a helmet. The total amount of fine imposed till December 22 this year come Rs 17,85,57,300.

He said while the police had been appealing to all to follow traffic rules, the violations would be taken up in a serious manner.

Issuing a warning to the youths using cracker sound on the motorcycles, he said strict action would be taken against the violators. He said a case had also been recently registered for changing lane on highways as it posed a risk of accidents.
