The Panipat police have nabbed two persons for allegedly harassing a girl by inappropriately touching her while she was on NH-44 in the city.

The accused have been identified as Pramod and Sanjeev, both residents of Sinoli village in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh.

According to DSP Suresh Saini, the incident came to light late Sunday night after a video went viral on social media, in which two youths on a motorcycle were seen touching two girls from behind as they crossed NH-44, reportedly with the intent to harass them.

Following the incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupender Singh immediately directed the City SHO and three teams to inquire into the matter. The video was found to have been recorded near the Red Light Chowk U-turn.

Police were able to identify the motorcycle number and nabbed both the accused, he said.

During preliminary investigation, the accused revealed that they had come to Panipat to purchase scrap material from a godown on Barsat Road and were returning to Uttar Pradesh when they saw the girls crossing the GT road and intentionally touched one of them inappropriately.

SP Singh said the police is committed to provide a safe atmosphere to women in the district.

Hot spots have been identified in the city, and security has been enhanced with the deployment of Durga Shakti teams, women police personnel and Emergency Response Vehicles at sensitive locations, the SP added.
