Marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing it of consistently undermining the values of the Constitution while pretending to be its guardian.

Speaking at a programme titled ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ held in Karnal on Wednesday, CM Saini said, “Undermining the core values of the Constitution is in the DNA of the Congress, even though they pretend to be its protectors.”

He contrasted this with the governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming the country has followed constitutional principles sincerely since 2014.

“Under PM Modi, India has seen true constitutional governance over the past 11 years. People have witnessed a truly independent India,” he said.

Recalling the night of June 25, 1975, Saini described Emergency as a "dark chapter" in India’s democracy. “Innocent citizens were arrested and tortured. The brutality still sends chills down our spines,” he said, calling it a deliberate political conspiracy driven by arrogance.

“Not once during the Emergency was the Constitution or democracy remembered. Writers and leaders who dared to dissent were jailed.”

Saini invoked historical figures to reinforce his criticism. “When India gained Independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel unified 562 princely states. Only one was entrusted to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the consequences are well known,” he said.

Taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Saini said, “Their Yuvraj once stood in Parliament, the temple of democracy, and tore up a Bill, insulting the Constitution. The generations that now talk of protecting the Constitution never respected it.”

He also cited the case of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who opposed the permit system in Jammu and Kashmir and died while fighting for “one Constitution, one head of state and one National Flag.”

“It was Prime Minister Modi who abolished Article 370 and fulfilled Dr Mukherjee’s dream,” Saini said.

Criticising Congress-era governance, the Chief Minister said, “India did not progress at the speed it should have after Independence. The contrast between 55 years of Congress rule and 11 years under PM Modi is stark.”

He concluded by urging people, especially the youth, to learn about the Emergency and preserve democracy.

“This event is not just about reflection but preparing for a future where freedom thrives and democracy remains strong.”

The CM also visited an exhibition by the Public Relations Department and planted a sapling at Kalpana Chawla Medical College. Several dignitaries, including MLA Yogender Rana, Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, and others, were present.
