The issue of water contamination in the Gurgaon canal and the “reckless” licensing of slaughterhouses in Mewat dominated the question hour on the second day of the monsoon session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha here today.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the poor state of the Yamuna was the legacy of the Opposition government in Delhi. “During their tenure, the condition of the Yamuna had severely deteriorated. No concrete steps were taken to clean and restore the river,” he told the House.

The CM informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had intervened in the matter. “On his directions, a meeting was recently convened in Delhi, attended by the Delhi Chief Minister, Union Water Resources Minister and myself. A joint committee has now been constituted for the cleaning of the Yamuna,” he said.

Claiming progress, Saini said, “Over the past four months, 16,000 metric tonnes of waste have been removed from the Yamuna. Yamuna is now becoming cleaner, and this reflects the firm resolve of the Haryana Government.”

Environment Minister Rao Narbir Singh underlined that cleaning the river was both a responsibility and a commitment. “It is our duty to fulfil Prime Minister Modi’s resolve to make the Yamuna clean. Eleven locations have been identified where polluted water enters the river, and STPs will be set up at these points,” he said.

Singh also shared the state’s progress on treatment facilities. “Before 2014, there were 25 STPs and 7 common treatment plants (CTPs) in Haryana. In the last 10 years, we have set up 65 new STPs and 10 new CTPs. Another 8 STPs and 8 CTPs are in the pipeline,” he said.

Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed, who raised the contamination issue, argued that polluted water flowing from the Yamuna Canal into the Gurgaon Canal was affecting Nuh, Palwal, Faridabad and Gurugram districts. “A committee was formed to look into the contamination but no conclusive results came out. Even fertile land is becoming barren,” he said.

Replying to another question by MLA Maman Khan on the licensing of slaughterhouses in Mewat, the Environment Minister clarified that these were treated as an industry. “How can we deny licences to the party if the conditions are fulfilled? Rules of the Union Ministry of Environment are being followed while issuing NOCs,” Singh said.

He said inspections were carried out after complaints were received. “A team of the sarpanch, SDM, BDPO and veterinary surgeon visited villages after grievances were raised and fines were imposed for shortcomings,” he said.

Since 2014, 28 slaughterhouses in Mewat have been granted NOCs, while 7 applications are still under process, Singh informed.
