Dhanana and 10 other villages pooled in resources to collect the relief material. Dhanana is the biggest village of Jaatu Khap-84. Despite being surrounded by stagnant rainwater that has destroyed crops, people mobilised efforts to assist the people of Punjab.
Ajit Ghanghas, a youth of the village, said local youth pooled money and gathered essential supplies, including bottled water, mosquito nets, flour, potatoes, onions, pickles and pulses. They are sending the material to Hussainiwala in Ferozepur district, situated along the Sutlej river.
Bhim Singh, pradhan of the khap, said the goods were being sent to Punjab as they shared a special bond with the people there. He said relief material worth about Rs 6 lakh had been collected.
He said the first truck was sent from Talu village — another village of Jatu Khap-84 — followed by the second from Dhanana. Jagbir Singh, a resident of the village, said they would soon emerge out of the distress as the water was likely to recede in their village, “but people in Punjab are facing tougher conditions".
