As per information, an undertrial, identified as Sukhbir, an Uttar Pradesh native who was living in Panchkula, was arrested by the Panchkula police, was sent to the Ambala Central Jail on August 12, after orders were issued in this regard by a Panchkula court.
He was arrested in connection with a case of obscenity, registered in August last year at the Chandimandir police station in Panchkula.
On August 13, he was found missing during the counting of inmates in the evening.
Jail authorities failed to locate the missing undertrial, and, the next day, a case was registered in this regard at the Baldev Nagar police station.
The police formed various teams to nab the escapee; however, the teams have been unsuccessful so far.
Authorities found that the walls of the jail cell were not scaled, and the locks were intact. Based on CCTV footage, authorities suspect that the undertrial had managed to conceal himself in a vehicle that came to deliver gas on August 13, and escaped.
According to information, Sukhbir was last seen at the jail at around 2.44 pm, and the vehicle had arrived at around 2.50 pm. The jail administration has suspended the Chief Warden and the Warden for the lapse, and has sought an explanation from an ASI. Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat said: “Five-six teams are working on this case.”
