Wheat growers concerned as dense fog engulfs region

Dense fog blanketed the region late on Friday evening, reducing visibility to around 10 m. The sudden arrival of fog at around 6 pm came as a surprise to residents, who enjoyed bright sunshine during the day.

As per weather experts, the climatic conditions in the coming days are largely dependent on wind velocity and the presence of clouds on Saturday.

Agricultural scientists have expressed concern over the impact of the sudden change in weather on wheat crop.

They warn that increased moisture due to fog could lead to an outbreak of yellow rust disease and other fungal infections, posing a threat to yield quality.

The unexpected weather change has put farmers on alert. Growers have been advised to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

Dr Virender Lather, retired Principal Scientist, IARI Delhi, said, “Fog increases humidity, which creates a favourable environment for yellow rust and other fungal diseases. Farmers should regularly inspect their fields and consider timely fungicide sprays to protect their crop.”
