Women making major contribution in nation’s progress, says Kurukshetra varsity VC

Women’s Studies Research Centre, Kurukshetra University, in collaboration with the Haryana State Commission for Women on Friday organised a poetry competition to mark International Women’s Day. The event was organised to celebrate their contribution, achievements, fostering awareness of women’s rights, equality and empowerment.

Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, said that there is a dire need to push gender equality through bold and decisive actions. At present, women are making a significant contribution by participating actively in every field for the development of the country.

The chief guest, Chairperson, Haryana State Commission for Women, Renu Bhatia, said that women should face the challenges of life by strengthening themselves. There is a need to change society’s attitude towards women because till the time the negative thinking towards women does not end, exploitation of women would not end.

Renu Bhatia called upon women to be aware of their rights and duties. She talked about men respecting women and protecting them from insult. Director, Women’s Studies Research Centre, Prof Anita Dua presented the outline of the programme.

Deputy Director, Public Relations, Dr Jimmy Sharma informed that 26 students of various universities participated in the poetry competition.

In the competition, Sumit Kumar won the first position and also bagged a prize of Rs 21,000. Anjali Banga and Sanjeev Kumar got the second and third spots and also bagged the prize of Rs 11,000 and Rs 5,100 respectively.
