Women play significant role in law: SC Judge

Deeksharambh’, a comprehensive student orientation programme, is being organised at Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University for students admitted to the BA LLB (honours) course (2025-30 batch). The programme, conducted under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Devinder Singh, is being held for the first time, from August 2 to August 8.

‘Deeksharambh’ commenced with two sessions.

Justice MM Sundresh, Judge, Supreme Court, was the chief guest at the first session of the event.

On the occasion, the vice-chancellor introduced Justice Sundresh to the audience, and said he was known for his progressive legal outlook and landmark decisions — such as ordering a CBI investigation into interstate elephant poaching; advocating for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s portrait on currency notes; and challenging restrictions on certificates for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Addressing the gathering, the chief guest said, “If your words are positive, the world will love you; words are the most powerful weapon.”

He said the new students were now entering a profession where facts were used for the betterment of individuals and society.

Students would study society deeply, he added, stating, “The future of women is bright, and they are playing a vital role in various fields of the legal profession through their active participation.”

Justice AP Sahi, Chairperson, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, said leadership in the legal field could only be achieved by engaging with the Bar.

He also discussed the relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s age, cautioning that, while tools such as ChatGPT could be useful, they must be used responsibly. Citing a study by the US’ MIT, he said AI tools were slowing down cognitive function, adding that India had the highest usage of such tools.

Justice Arun Monga of the Delhi High Court delved into the meaning of ‘deeksharambh’, stating that it was rooted in Indian culture.

He said the sincere pursuit of legal education would provide the students with ample opportunities to learn and grow. Justice Ashok Kumar Jain of the Rajasthan High Court, as the chief guest at the second session of the event, said: “Law is not merely a set of principles; it is the real world.”

He said justice was a powerful force of hope, asserting that law was not just a set of rules but the foundation of society. He reflected on the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr BR Ambedkar. University Registrar and ‘Deeksharambh’ coordinator Ashutosh Mishra extended gratitude to all the dignitaries for devoting their time to the event.
