The department of cardiac surgery at the PGIMS here celebrated World Heart Day by felicitating a child who underwent complex congenital heart surgery recently.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr SS Lohchab, head of department of cardiac surgery, said every year World Heart Day highlights the global threat of heart disease but in 2025, the warning is especially critical for India. “With over 213 million Indians affected, cardiovascular diseases now cause nearly one in three deaths nationwide. The World Heart Federation’s 2025 theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” underscores the urgency. India, home to less than one-fifth of the world’s population, bears over 60 per cent of its heart disease burden,” he added.

Dr Lohchab said driven by diabetes, hypertension, poor diets, pollution, and inactivity, the crisis was more than medical. “It is a growing social and economic emergency demanding immediate, public health action,” he added.
