Yamunanagar MC directs officials to make public spaces free of stray animals

Yamunanagar Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad has directed officials from various departments to ensure that government and private hospitals, educational institutions, national highways, major roads, bus stands, railway stations and sports complexes are made free of stray dogs and stray cattle.

Chairing a meeting with representatives of these departments, Parsad instructed them to strictly comply with the Supreme Court’s orders regarding the management of stray dogs and cattle.

Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Animal Husbandry Department, Civil Hospital, Public Works Department (Buildings and Roads), Transport Department, Sports Department and several educational institutions attended the meeting.

He said the Supreme Court had issued clear directions to ensure that government hospitals, private hospitals, educational institutions, national highways, major roads, bus stands, railway stations and other public places were kept free of stray dogs and cattle.

Parsad asked NHAI and Public Works Department officials to form patrolling teams and issue a helpline number to monitor the presence of stray dogs and cattle on national highways and major roads. He added that boards and hoardings displaying the helpline number should be installed at key points so that motorists and the public could report sightings of stray cattle or accidents involving them.

He further stated that whenever stray cattle were found on national highways, they must be caught and shifted to gaushalas.

The Commissioner directed officials of Railways and Haryana Roadways to ensure that stray dogs were removed from railway station and bus stand premises and sent to the Municipal Corporation’s dog shelter home. “Dogs should not be allowed to enter the premises of railway station and bus stands. Passengers should not also be allowed to throw food in the open, so that stray dogs are attracted to the food,” said Mahabir Parsad.

In his instructions to representatives of government and private hospitals, educational institutions, sports complexes and other establishments, he said each institution must appoint nodal officers to control the stray dog menace. Their names, mobile numbers and other details should be prominently displayed at the main gate of the institution, he added.
