The construction work of Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Government Medical College is in full swing in Yamunanagar. Expected to be completed by March next year, the college is expected to not only provide medical education opportunities to residents of the region, but also access to government-managed healthcare facilities closer to home. This college is being established on 20-acre gram panchayat land at Panjupur village of the district.

So far, 65 per cent of the work of the college has been completed, with the rest likely to be completed by March 31, 2026.

Once the construction work is complete, the college, offering medical courses including MBBS, would add to the state’s medical infrastructure. It would also aid residents of Yamunanagar and surrounding areas in receiving medical attention at a government institute near their homes.

Currently, area residents rely on either PGI, Chandigarh, or expensive private hospitals for treatment.

The college will also help address the problem of shortage of doctors in the state. The ‘bhoomi poojan’ of the college was performed by then Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on September 25, 2023.

M/S Bridge and Roof Company (I) Limited was appointed the executive agency of the project. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,122.71 crore.

Key amenities to be offered here include a 500-bed hospital building; a medical college building able to accommodate 100 MBBS students per year; a girls’ hostel with a 250-student capacity; a boys’ hostel with a 350-student capacity; junior and senior resident hostels; residences; and nursing, paramedical and physiotherapy colleges.

The Haryana Government is keen on making the college functional at the earliest, and does not want to compromise on the quality of the construction work. It appointed Naveen Ahuja, Deputy Commissioner, Yamunanagar, as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for the college a few months ago.

During an inspection held by the OSD recently, he instructed the officials concerned to expedite the construction work of the medical college. Classes are expected to start here from the next academic session, according to the DC.

Boon for city, but sans road connectivity

While the college will come as a huge relief for the district’s residents, there is no direct connectivity between the college and Yamunanagar city.

In the absence of a direct road, city residents will have to find alternative routes, having to travel several kilometres more to reach the medical college.

In this regard, residents have demanded a direct road from Vishwakarma Chowk to the under-construction college.

Congress leader Satpal Kaushik, who has been raising the issue for a long time, said, in case of emergency, patients would face a lot of delays in getting medical services at the college if a direct road was not constructed. BJP MLA from Yamunanagar Ghanshyam Dass Arora has been making serious efforts to solve the issue.
