The youth, identified as Amandeep, was discovered unconscious behind a village gurdwara late on December 10. A syringe and drug-related items were found near his body. His family initially believed the death was natural and performed his cremation the next day.
Doubts later emerged after relatives reviewed the CCTV footage installed near the gurdwara. The footage showed Amandeep going to the area behind the gurdwara with two youth from the same village. According to the family, the three consumed drugs there. Amandeep injected drug himself. When he collapsed, others left the spot.
Family members also alleged that Amandeep’s mobile phone and some cash were missing from his pockets. His brother, Manpreet, later filed a complaint with the police, accusing one of the youths of stealing the mobile phone.
Relatives said Amandeep had struggled with addiction in the past, but had stopped using injectable drugs several months earlier. They said drug users in the village often gather behind gurdwara, a practice known to the locals.
When Amandeep did not return home that night, his family searched for him for hours. He was eventually found lying unconscious behind the gurdwara. No one had informed the family about his condition earlier. They believe that timely medical treatment could have saved his life.
After the CCTV footage came to light, the family approached the police. A case was registered at the Sadar police station, and an investigation initiated into the incident.
Amandeep worked as a welder. He was married and is survived by his wife and a two-year-old son.
