The Tissa police have apprehended a man accused of raping a 17-year-old girl who gave birth to a child at Tissa Civil Hospital on June 1. The case came to light when hospital authorities informed the police about the minor’s age during delivery.

According to the police, the girl’s mother brought her to the hospital in labour. Upon confirmation of her age, the hospital authorities immediately notified the Tissa police, who recorded the mother’s statement and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The girl’s mother revealed that her daughter had eloped with Harinder Kumar, the accused, from a nearby village last June, allegedly with the intention of marriage. Despite initial reluctance, the family chose not to report the incident due to concerns about family honour.

However, when the girl returned home pregnant and gave birth to a child, her mother took her to the hospital, leading to the registration of the case. The police arrested Harinder Kumar from his residence based on the mother’s statement.

The victim’s statement has been recorded and the accused will be presented before a magistrate. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav confirmed the arrest and stated that the investigation is ongoing.
