With the onset of the Van Mahotsav in the state, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) planted one lakh saplings of medicinal plants in Nigani and Taranda in the tribal district of Kinnaur.

Under this initiative to boost medicinal farming, 50,000 saplings were planted in Chhot Kanda with the assistance of the Nigani Gram Van Vikas Samiti and Nigani Herbal Group in Nichar Forest Range. Similarly, 50,000 such saplings were planted in Taranda with the help of Taranda Gram Van Vikas Samiti and Maa Herbal Group.

Forest Service Officer CM Sharma (retd), Forest Range Officer Nihar Mausam Dharaik, Deputy Forest Range Officer Nihar Naresh Kumar as well as members of the herbal group and Gram Van Vikas Samiti participated in it. A training workshop for medicinal farming was organised in Nigulsari under the Nichar Forest Range on July 19. During this workshop, Dr SK Kapta, biodiversity expert of the JICA Forestry Project, familiarised people with the cultivation of valuable herbs.
