Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsIn a strong push to ensure that no eligible child is left out of the benefits of state-run welfare schemes, the District Child Protection Unit organised a one-day training camp at the Block Development Office auditorium at Sundernagar in Mandi district today. The training witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 130 Anganwari workers and supervisors from the Sundernagar block.
The training aimed to sensitise and equip frontline workers with in-depth knowledge about key child welfare schemes, legal provisions and procedures so they can act as effective conduits between the government and the community.
Addressing the gathering, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) NR Thakur emphasised the pivotal role of grassroots workers in transforming government welfare schemes into real impact. He highlighted three major state initiatives — Mission Vatsalya, Mukhyamantri Sukhashray Yojana and Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana — terming these as “rays of hope” for orphans and vulnerable children in Himachal Pradesh.
“These schemes ensure not just education and safety, but also dignity and a secure future for children in need,” he said.
Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Poonam Chauhan briefed participants about key departmental programmes such as Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, DEI Yojana and other child development schemes. She urged the Anganwari workers to proactively reach out to more families, especially those from marginalised sections and link them to these programs.
Protection Officer Shailja Awasthi provided detailed insights into the ill-effects of child marriage, the structure and purpose of the Sponsorship Scheme, After-Care Scheme and the legal adoption process. She encouraged workers to guide families toward support mechanisms.
Legal and Probation Officer Rama Kumari elaborated on important legal frameworks including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice Act and other legal safeguards for children. She stressed the need for timely reporting, child-friendly practices and community awareness to tackle child abuse and exploitation effectively.
The interactive session also served as a platform to address field-level challenges faced by Anganwari workers. The officials resolved queries and distributed promotional materials related to child-centric schemes. These resources will help Anganwari workers raise awareness within communities and improve outreach efforts.
The event concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen the last-mile delivery of welfare schemes. With enhanced knowledge and resources, these frontline workers are now better prepared to act as guardians of child rights and welfare at the grassroots level.
