As many as 14 beds were added to the ICU of the Vivekananda Medical Research Trust (VMRT) hospital here today. Former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar, who is also the chairman of the VMRT hospital, inaugurated the new ICU. He said now the number of ICU beds in the VMRT hospital had gone up to 43. He said it was the first hospital in the state equipped with 43-bed ICU.

Shanta Kumar also informed that the hospital would also start a nursing college soon. The bed capacity of the hospital would be enhanced to 150 with two new operation theaters.

He said the institution had achieved formidable position in the healthcare sector by providing quality medical services during the past 10 years.

“The management had last year set up an independent Cardiac Treatment Unit (cath lab) where dozens of angioplasties have been conducted. Earlier, people suffering from heart ailments had to go to the Chandigarh and Delhi,” Shanta Kumar added.

In the past three years Vivekananda Medical Institute has emerged the best in neurosurgery, general neuro ailments and cardiology, he said. “The institute excels in treating bone and joint-related ailments and is considered as the best in the state. A 99-year-old woman had undergone a successful hip surgery here,” he said.
