1,840 challaned in 15-day drive to check overloading, traffic violations

As many as 1,840 violators were challaned and a fine of Rs 4.9 lakh collected from them by the police during the 15-day special campaign that was launched to tackle overloading of vehicles and violation of traffic norms, besides promoting road safety in the district.

During the drive, 1,490 challans were issued for overloading passengers in vehicles, 173 challans were issued for overloading commercial vehicles, 92 for material protruding outside vehicles and 85 challans were issued for ferrying passengers in goods vehicle. At least 52,231 vehicles were checked during the campaign that was launched by the police on November 18.

Narvir Singh Rathour, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Traffic, Tourism and Railways (TTR), said the main aim behind launching this special drive was to ensure residents safety, to protect road infrastructure from damage due to overloading and to prevent accidents through strict enforcement of traffic rules.

He said the primary focus of the initiative was to prevent overloading of vehicles, unsafe transportation of goods and illegal ferrying of passenger in goods carriers.

Before the initiation of campaign, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Atul Verma had directed all district Superintendents of Police and the Railway Police to develop an effective strategy to take strict action against violators of traffic norms and review its progress daily.
