The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, conducted a two-day workshop-cum-training on asafoetida (hing) cultivation under ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’. Ten farmers of Kargil, UT Ladakh were apprised of the possibilities of the cultivation in the region, its climatic requirements, agro technology, biotic and abiotic stresses and quality analysis of oleo-gum resin. Practical demonstrations were carried out on nursery raising, plantation and tissue culture techniques.

The farmers were also made aware about the Kisan Sabha Mobile app. They visited the Heeng Germplasm Resource Centre and Seed Production Centre in the institute. Dr Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director, CSIR-IHBT discussed the role of biotechnological tools for large-scale propagation of planting material for sustainable cultivation and production of ‘heeng’ in the country.

Yadav motivated the farmers to undertake ‘heeng’ cultivation in a sustainable way to make a positive impact on the country’s production. He also distributed participation certificates to the farmers.
