From borrowing textbooks during their student days to holding prestigious leadership roles at Himachal Pradesh University, Prof Pradeep Kumar and Prof Harimohan are shining examples of how perseverance and passion can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Coming from economically weaker backgrounds, both professors faced significant struggles in their formative years. Prof Pradeep Kumar, now the Director of the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), recalls the days when he had to rely on classmates for books due to financial constraints. Yet, undeterred by adversity, he pursued his academic goals with unwavering determination — earning an MSc in Mathematics in 1988, followed by an MPhil in 1990 and a PhD in 1993.

His journey began in administration as Assistant Registrar at HPU in 1997, but his passion for education soon drew him toward academics. He served as a lecturer at the International Centre for Distance and Open Learning (ICDEOL), laying the foundation for his future leadership at CDOE.

Now at the helm of CDOE, Prof Kumar is committed to expanding student enrollment and strengthening educational access. He plans to increase awareness about CDOE programs at schools and colleges, streamline admissions, and enhance outreach efforts through targeted campaigns in district headquarters. Upgrading student services is another major focus—especially the reception and grievance cell, where students can get timely support without red tape.

“We also aim to upgrade learning resource centres and fill vacant non-teaching positions. Modernising infrastructure, including the provision of better computers and furniture for staff, is essential for our academic mission,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Prof Harimohan has taken charge as the Dean of the College Development Council (CDC) at HPU. A native of Una district, he too battled financial hardship during his student years. Despite facing a lack of resources during his MSc studies, he stayed resolute and completed his M.Sc. in Mathematics in 1986, followed by a PhD in 1992.

Joining HPU’s ICDEOL as a lecturer in 1997, Prof Harimohan has always remained student-focused. As Dean CDC, his vision is to foster stronger coordination between HPU and its affiliated colleges and work toward shaping a brighter and more inclusive academic future for the youth of Himachal Pradesh.
