3 houses collapse, several develop cracks as land sinks at Chabutra in Hamirpur

Nearly 100 people rendered homeless as at least three houses collapsed and many others developed cracks after a large portion of land began sinking and sliding at the SC habitat of Chabutra village in the Sujanpur Assembly constituency on Sunday evening.

All the villagers left their houses and rushed to the road side for safety. They were later accommodated in the school building in Chabutra, and some others were provided shelter at the Satsang Bhawan in the adjoining village of Badbdar.

Notably, the incessant rains had loosened the soil of the village that had rocky plateau beneath.

Joginder Singh, a villager, said that the villagers rushed towards the market when the land began sliding.

“Within minutes, some houses collapsed and others started developing cracks. The situation has turned from bad to worse following the continued downpour,” he said.

Meanwhile, villagers supported the affected people with meals and other necessities, and alerted the administration about the disaster.

Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh said that the administration is helping the affected people.

“People have been shifted to safer locations and provided shelter in government buildings. Teams from the disaster relief force, police, and administration have been deployed to help people.

Amarjit added that he personally visited the site and ensured that everything is provided to affected men, women and children.
