In a rare instance, as many as 33 currency coins were extracted from a patient’s stomach at Rainbow Hospital in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur, yesterday. The patient, who has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, was admitted at the hospital following stomachache. CEO Monica Sharma said the patient, who is 32-year-old, was brought to the hospital by his relatives. She said initial investigations revealed that the patient had swallowed 33 coins. She added that a team of doctors, led by Dr Ankush, reviewed the patient’s X-ray reports and decided to operate him.

Dr Ankush said the patient was admitted at the hospital on January 30 and his surgery was conducted after repeated rounds of investigations and diagnosis. He said since the patient had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, extra precautions were taken during the surgery. Dr Ankush said that schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterised by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness etc. He said the patient swallowed one coin of Rs 20, 27 coins of Rs 10 and five coins of Rs 2, which weighed around 247 gm.

He said the patient was recovering, adding that he would be sent home in couple of days. Meanwhile, relatives of the patient thanked the doctors of the hospital.
