42nd tournament kicks off in Shillai

Industry, Parliamentary Affairs and Labour and Employment Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan inaugurated the three-day 42nd Indira Memorial Tournament at Shillai’s Panchayat Ground on Wednesday.

The minister praised the organisers for sustaining this tournament for an exceptional 42 years, observing that such platforms allow children to present their talent with confidence. He noted that discipline, teamwork and inner strength flourish when youngsters actively participate in sports and cultural activities alongside regular academics.

Chauhan highlighted the crucial role of sports in shaping a complete personality, adding that physical fitness, mental clarity and character-building come naturally through consistent sporting engagement. He reminded the gathering that numerous athletes from Himachal Pradesh have earned recognition at national and international levels, bringing honour to both state and country.

Encouraging the youth to direct their energy toward constructive work, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting talented individuals. The state, he said, is offering incentives, honorariums and reservation in government jobs for outstanding athletes to ensure meaningful career opportunities.

To strengthen sports infrastructure in Shillai, he announced Rs 15 lakh for the local stadium and Rs 10 lakh for the community hall. He further assured that the overhead electric wires passing above the ground would be removed or suitably realigned for safety and convenience.

Himalaya Youth Sports and Culture Club president Ramesh Negi shared that the tournament has drawn participants from Uttarakhand, Haryana, Shimla and Sirmaur. This year’s edition features nearly 900 competitors. Events include 10 girls’ kabaddi teams, 30 boys’ kabaddi teams, 20 volleyball teams, 50 cricket teams, 50 chess players, 50 under-16 badminton teams, 60 open badminton teams and 70 teams in the 35 category. Cultural evenings are also planned to add colour to the tournament.

The opening ceremony witnessed enthusiastic participation from players, organisers and sports lovers, setting a vibrant tone for the competitions that will unfold over the next three days.
