With continuous disruptions on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway (NH-3), particularly between Mandi and Kullu, thousands of travellers were left stranded. Rising to the occasion, the administration, supported by locals and NGOs, ensured timely food, shelter and medical assistance.
The district has faced severe weather over the past several days, triggering multiple landslides and forcing the closure of key routes, especially at night when the risk of rockfall is greater. To ensure safety, temporary travel restrictions have been imposed during such hours.
To tackle the crisis, the Sub-Divisional Administration of Balichowki set up six relief camps at strategic locations along the highway. Facilities were established at the Laghu Bachat Bhawan near Aaut Tehsil Office and at Thalout, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to travellers. A relief centre with basic health services was opened near Tunnel No. 11 at Hanogi, while Radha Swami Satsang Bhawan in Nagwain offered both food and shelter.
Community support amplified the relief measures. Local NGOs, traders’ associations and generous individuals came forward with meals, drinking water and temporary accommodation, showcasing the deep-rooted spirit of compassion in the region.
According to official data, more than 7,000 people have received three meals a day and essential supplies since the disruption, while around 650 individuals have been provided overnight shelter at different relief points.
Balichowki SDM Devi Ram said restoration of the highway is being carried out on a war footing. “Meanwhile, all necessary arrangements for food, shelter and primary health care are being ensured at relief points. The community’s involvement has been invaluable and we deeply appreciate their support,” he added. Though weather conditions turned pleasant on Thursday, the administration remains on high alert to safeguard travellers and prevent further crises.
