Mandi, January 24

The Kaza administration in the tribal Lahaul-Spiti district has geared up restoration work of roads and power supply in the Spiti valley. A majority of villages were cut off since January 8 due to heavy snowfall in the region.

Kaza Subdivisional Magistrate Jeevan Negi said due to heavy snowfall, several roads had been blocked for traffic movement. The Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department and Border Roads Organisation had started snow-clearing operations in the Spiti valley and restored a few roads for traffic movement for the convenience of people.

He said Kaza to Kibber-Chimchim, Kaza to Hikkim, Shichling to Dhankhar and Shichling to Mane roads had been restored in Spiti. Now, efforts were on to restore the Hikkim-Komic road. There is 4-foot snow in the area, which is major challenge for the authorities.

The SDM said three JCBs and 24 machines were engaged in road-clearing work by the PWD. Soon, the Atragu-Sagnam and Lidag-Demul roads would be restored for traffic movement.

“The BRO has engaged its workforce and machinery on the NH-5 and cleared the road from Sumdo up to Jhundi Nullah and Losar to Faldar Maidan. Power supply has also been restored in the Pin valley and Mud village in the region,” he added.
