After receiving reports about the detection of initial symptoms of yellow rust — a fungal disease in the wheat crop — in Pandrehar, Suliali, Thana, Gurchal, Baret and Sadwan gram panchayats of Nurpur, a team of agriculture experts from the state bio-control laboratory, Palampur, rushed to these panchayats on Friday. The team inspected the wheat crop in affected areas.

Led by Dr Aman Singh, the team found initial symptoms of yellow rust in the crop. They advised farmers to spray tilt fungicide — prepared by dissolving 1 millilitre (ml) of the fungicide in 1 litter water — on the wheat crop.

The team also sensitised farmers about the symptoms of yellow rust and its management in the crop. “Yellow rust is a serious disease that occurs during cool and moist weather conditions during the growing season of the crop,” an expert revealed.

Dr Shailesh Pal Sood, who was also part of the team, said a demonstration of the technique to spray fungicide was given at Suliali and farmers were also given fungicide on the spot so that they could protect their crop from the disease.
