Cherry growers have urged the government to allow the manufacturing of cartons and cardboards as the fruit season is nearing.

Farmers said cherries grown at the lower elevation would be ready for harvesting by April 25. However, factories manufacturing packaging materials such as cardboards, cartons and punnets had not resumed production, said Prakash Thakur, former vice-chairperson of the HPMC.

He said the fruit would be ready by the third week of April.

The government should intervene and assure that packaging material was available to the farmers before April 25, he said.

The Director, Horticulture, assured of looking into the issue.
