An ambulance travelling from Kaza Civil Hospital to Rekong Peo Hospital in Kinnaur on Thursday was obstructed near Hurling village in Lahaul and Spiti district by two vehicles — a tempo traveller and a car — leading to an unnecessary delay in emergency medical services. The delay reportedly occurred due to a dispute between the two drivers over giving way, blocking the ambulance’s passage.

Acting swiftly on the information, the Lahaul-Spiti Police initiated legal action against both drivers under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The car driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Consequently, he was charged under Sections 185 (driving under the influence), 194E (obstruction of emergency vehicles), 100(2), 182A(4), 190(2), and 177, resulting in a hefty fine of Rs 44,000.

The tempo traveller driver, who was also found violating traffic regulations, was booked under Sections 196 (driving without insurance), 111, 182A (4) and 177, amounting to a fine of Rs 20,500.

The police emphasised the importance of public cooperation in allowing a clear path for emergency vehicles. In a public statement, Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz appealed to all motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and support emergency services.
