The Government College at Takipur in Kangra district organised an awareness programme on the occasion of World Water Day, under the joint aegis of the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and the Central Ground Water Board, Government of India.

This year’s theme was, “Water and sustainable development”, which focused on the importance of water conservation. Natural water sources were cleaned. Local residents were encouraged to save water considering its importance in everyday life today.

Speaking on the occasion, college Principal Dr RS Gill highlighted the significance of water conservation. He said water consumption in India was increasing rapidly. He warned that if water crisis was not addressed in time, the situation could become severe in the future. He also emphasised on the need to turn Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Catch the Rain” campaign into a mass movement.

On the occasion, Dr Sanjay Pandey, hydrogeologist, and ML Meena, Executive Engineer, Central Ground Water Board, Dharamsala, were present as special guests. They delivered a detailed lecture on the importance of water conservation and honoured NSS volunteers with T-shirts and caps.

Cleanliness drive in surrounding areas

"Swachhata Pachhwara", a cleanliness drive was held in the surrounding areas of Takipur to collect and scientifically dispose of plastic waste. College students together with volunteers of Anganwadi and Mahila Mandal and panchayat representatives enthusiastically participated in the cleanliness drive to conserve water sources. On the occasion, Ishaant Jaswal, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Kangra, who was the chief guest, highlighted the urgent need for water conservation, while emphasising on the judicious use of water and saving it from pollution. Besides, Jal Shakti Department (JSD), Kangra division, and Government College in collaboration with Gramin Yuva Sangathan, Daulatpur, organised an awareness workshop on the occasion of World Water Day.
