Students from Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, gained firsthand exposure to the Indian prison system during an educational visit to the Model Central Jail in Kanda, Shimla, on Tuesday. The visit offered a comprehensive look into prison administration, correctional facilities and rehabilitation initiatives in India.

The students observed various aspects of prison operations, including security protocols, daily routines and vocational training programmes aimed at inmate reformation. Jail authorities highlighted modern correctional strategies such as education, psychological counselling and job-oriented training designed to facilitate the reintegration of prisoners into society.

An interactive session with prison officials allowed students to raise questions on prison law, inmates’ rights, infrastructural challenges and the evolving role of correctional institutions within the criminal justice system.

The visit was organised under the guidance of Dr Hari Chand, Club Coordinator of the Rotaract Club. “This visit provided invaluable practical exposure to students, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world challenges in incarceration and rehabilitation,” Dr Chand said.
