The incident drew a large crowd on the bridge and the nearby bypass as locals gathered to witness the operation.
According to the police, the Sadar police station received information around 2:30 pm that a body was floating in the water below the old bridge. A police team rushed to the spot accompanied by the Fire Department. The rescue personnel retrieved the body from the middle of the stream.
The deceased is a male aged between 40 and 45 years. The police reported noticeable injuries on his face, suggesting he might have died after falling from a height. The exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination.
During the search, the police found a rucksack at some distance from the site. It contained only a pair of trousers. No documents, mobile phone or belongings were found on the body to help establish his identity. The remains have been sent to the Zonal Hospital for further legal formalities.
The police have informed nearby police stations for assistance in identification. SP Sakshi Verma said an investigation is underway and the post-mortem report would clarify the cause of death.
