The construction company Afcons connected both portals of the 1.8-km-long tunnel on the Chandigarh-Manali highway today. This tunnel was constructed under a mighty mountain between Rainsnala to Dwada in Mandi.

Sources said during the excavation, the company faced challenges because the strata was loose. It took more than a year to connect both portals of the tunnel.

The Chandigarh-Manali fourlane is the lifeline for the tourism industry of Kullu-Manali. During the summer, it is used by the Army to provide essential supplies to its soldiers deployed in border areas in the Ladakh region.

Aman Rohila, project director of the NHAI, said it was a major achievement for the NHAI that the both portals had been connected and the NHAI had stepped up construction work of fourlaning. — TNS
