Vivek Kumar, a Class VIII student of Government Senior Secondary at Sidhpurghat, was inflating a balloon near the school gate yesterday when it slipped down his throat and choked his windpipe. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, from where he was shifted to a Pathankot facility. Though doctors removed the balloon, the boy did not survive.

As the boy hailed from an underprivileged family, the school staff and former MLA Neeraj Bharti contributed Rs 50,000 each for his treatment, but in vain.
