Bridge on NH-707 in disrepair, PWD, NHAI pass the buck
The dilapidated bridge over the Giri river near Sataun on National Highway-707 has become a cause for concern for commuters. Despite public outcry, the authorities concerned have failed to undertake necessary repairs, forcing vehicles to navigate the bridge at considerable risk.
This bridge connects the constituencies of Renukaji, Paonta Sahib and Shillai, serving thousands of residents daily. The bridge’s iron plates have been broken for a long time. The plate on the Sataun side has also come loose, further aggravating the situation.
The maintenance of the bridge has fallen into bureaucratic tangle with the Public Works Department (PWD) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) passing the responsibility back and forth. While the NHAI claims the PWD’s Mechanical Wing should handle the repairs, the PWD asserts that as it falls under the national highway network, the NHAI should take charge.
The bridge is not just a vital lifeline for three constituencies but also plays a crucial role in the region’s economy. Hundreds of vehicles carrying goods, especially limestone from Sataun — the largest limestone market in North India — cross this bridge daily. The current state of disrepair has turned this essential route into a hazard, risking both lives and economic stability.
Frustrated by the inaction, local residents have raised their voice, demanding immediate intervention. Letters have been sent to both the state and central governments highlighting the dire state of the bridge. Community members warn that the deteriorating condition could lead to a catastrophe.
Local leaders and residents are urging authorities to resolve the impasse and prioritise the safety of commuters and the continuity of economic activities.
