His personal security officer was seriously injured in the incident and is being treated at AIIMS Bilaspur. According to an eyewitness, three to four individuals entered Thakur’s house and fired several bullets, leaving Thakur, his PSO, and a few others injured.

It may be recalled that Bumber Thakur was attacked by some people in the office of a construction company, which is laying a railway line to Bilaspur from Bhanupli in Punjab, a few months ago.

In that incident, too, Thakur was injured and was taken to a hospital in Bilaspur for treatment. Trilok Jamwal, MLA Bilaspur, said that the firing on the former MLA was unfortunate, adding that law and order in the state had completely collapsed and the situation in Bilaspur district had turned from bad to worse.

He said that if the leaders of the ruling party were not safe in the district, how could the general public feel safe and secure? He said that an environment of organised crime had developed in Bilaspur, similar to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and the police had virtually failed to curb crime in the district.
