Car overturns in Atal Tunnel, 4 injured

Three individuals sustained injuries while one escaped with minor injuries when an Alto car (HR-11F-5004) overturned inside the 9.02-km-long Atal Tunnel. The accident occurred as the group was returning from Lahaul valley. According to police reports, driver Mohit Sharma (34) from Yamunanagar, Haryana, lost control of the vehicle while adjusting the heat blower. The car dragged along the dividers, hit the left wall and overturned in the middle of the tunnel.

Ravinder Kumar (30) of Kaithal stated that the vehicle’s loss of control led to the crash. The injured were treated at Manali hospital. Manali DSP KD Sharma confirmed a case under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita had been registered and investigations were ongoing.

Authorities recently issued advisories prohibiting overtaking in the tunnel, penalising violators. Cameras installed monitor overspeeding and other violations, including halting or unruly behaviour, with heavy fines imposed for offences.
