Chamba’s long-distance runner Seema has again brought glory to the state and the country by winning silver medal in the 5000-metre race at the World University Games 2025, held in Rhein-Ruhr, Germany.

The landmark achievement marks the first-ever medal by an Indian woman in the 5000m event at the World University Games, setting a historic precedent in Indian athletics. The games were held from July 16 to 27. Seema was initially selected for both 5000m and 10,000m races. However, an administrative lapse denied her the opportunity to compete in the 10,000m final, which was held on July 21. Taking the disappointment of a missed chance in her stride, Seema competed in the 5000m race and won the medal.

She has dedicated her victory to hard work, guidance from her coach and blessings of her parents.

Seema said the medal is not just a personal milestone for her, but a message for aspiring athletes from under-represented regions that nothing is impossible if one works with courage and consistency.

Known for her past achievements at national and international levels, Seema has steadily risen through the ranks to be counted among India’s top female long-distance runners.
