A large number of commuters were left stranded as the disruption, caused by heavy rainfall, led to a complete halt in the movement of vehicles for approximately eight hours.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), were immediately mobilised to clear the highway.

Mandi Additional Superintendent of Police Sagar Chander said the highway was reopened for traffic after the removal of the debris.

The highway’s temporary closure led to significant delay for both commuters and commercial transporters. However, light vehicles were diverted to alternative routes between Mandi and Kullu to mitigate the disruption, the additional SP said.

The NHAI’s quick response ensured that the road was cleared as swiftly as possible, minimising the impact on travellers, claimed officials.

Meanwhile, the local authorities have issued warning about the possibility of more landslides and adverse weather conditions in view of the ongoing monsoon. They have advised drivers to exercise caution and stay updated on road conditions before travelling.

It is worth mentioning that the stretch of Chandigarh-Manali highway between Mandi and Pandoh remains prone to landslides.

While commuters commended the swift action by the NHAI and the local officials, the event once again highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure to severe weather conditions and need for continued vigilance and preparedness.
