In order to get rid of non-operational streetlights, the Municipal Corporation, Shimla is set to install solar streetlights across the city.

For this, the Municipal Corporation will conduct a ward-wise survey to find out areas receiving more sunlight. The Municipal Corporation will then proceed to install solar panels and lights in these areas, thus replacing the dysfunctional streetlights.

The decision was taken during the recent meeting of the Finance Contract and Planning Committee (FCPC) that was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Surinder Chauhan.

Chauhan said maintenance cost of old lights was very high as compared to solar streetlights. He further said they would soon conduct the survey to replace non-functional lights. “A lot of streetlights across the city are non-operational. As a result, commuters, especially pedestrians, face a lot of inconvenience during the late hours,” he said.
