Closed for 7 months due to snow, Gramphu-Losar road restored

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) restored the crucial Gramphu-Losar road stretch on the Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway in Lahaul and Spiti district today. The road was closed for the past seven months due to heavy snowfall on the formidable Kunzum Pass (14,931ft), cutting off access to the Spiti valley from the Manali and Lahaul side since November last year. However, the Spiti valley was accessible from the Kinnaur side via Shimla.

With the reopening of this strategic road, Spiti is now accessible from Manali via Kunzum Pass and the tourist season is expected to gain momentum in the coming days. This road stretch is not only vital for local mobility and essential supplies but is also a gateway to Spiti for tourists to experience its breathtaking landscapes, monasteries and high-altitude adventure.

The BRO has completed snow clearance and basic restoration of the road but civil traffic is yet to be formally allowed. The district administration of Lahaul and Spiti is awaiting the green light from the BRO before opening the route to general public. As of today, only a few 4x4 vehicles managed to pass the newly opened road from the Spiti side towards Manali.

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana appreciated the relentless efforts of the BRO personnel, who braved harsh weather conditions to clear snow and restore the road link. "The BRO's dedication has once again ensured timely clearance of the road and the restoration of access to this remote and beautiful region. Soon, tourists will be able to travel from Manali and the Lahaul side to Spiti, which will bring a major boost to the local economy," she added.
