Over 80 per cent voting was recorded in panchayat elections in Mandi district in first phase today. The voting was held in 190 gram panchayats of district having 1,154 wards.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur cast his vote along with his wife Dr Sadhana Thakur at polling booth Government Primary School, Kurani, under gram panchayat Murhag under Seraj assembly segment of Mandi district.

According to District Election Officer Mandi Rugved Thakur, in Seraj block the voting percentage was recorded 88.13 per cent, in Dharampur block it was 72.31 per cent, in Chauntra block 72.3 per cent, in Gohar block 86.81 per cent and in Balichowki 86.6 per cent voting took place. In Kullu district overall 84.20 per cent polling was recorded. Kullu DC and District Election Officer Richa Verma 83.87 per cent polling was registered in Kullu block, 84.37 per cent in Naggar block, 86.02 per cent in Banjar block, 85.78 per cent in Anni block and 81.20 per cent in Nirmand block. — TNS

Men outnumber women in Shimla

Shimla: Shimla recorded 79 per cent of polling in the first phase of the panchayat elections. Men (80.20 pc) outnumbered women (77.80 per cent) in exercising their franchise.

A total number of voters in the district were 1,14,051, including 58,679 men and 55,372 women. The highest polling was recorded in Chhohra block (84 per cent) followed by Theog 82.2 per cent, Nankhari 82 per cent, Jubbal Kotkhai 80.5 per cent, Kupvi 79.3 per cent, Rohru 79 per cent, Basantpur 78.5 per cent, Chopal 77.2 per cent, Rampur 76 per cent, Totu 75.6 per cent and Mashobra 68.5 per cent.

Eight Covid patients and one patient in home quarantine also cast their vote. People were enthusiastic for the elections and voters lighted bonfires to keep themselves warm while waiting for their turn in chilled atmosphere. About 63.40 per cent polling was recorded in 26 panchayats of tribal Kinnaur district. — TNS
