Construction professionals learn quake-resistant techniques in Kullu

Kullu’s District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) organised a six-day capacity development workshop at the Government Polytechnic Institute in Seobagh to train construction professionals in earthquake-resistant building techniques. Special training was provided to 22 masons, carpenters and bar binders.

Engineer Lokesh Sharma led the training, explaining methods to enhance structural durability in seismic zones. He emphasised the importance of structural design, material selection and proper construction techniques. Participants learned advanced methods to strengthen buildings, ensuring they withstand earthquakes effectively.

Sharma highlighted that the workshop aimed to equip professionals with technical knowledge to minimize earthquake damage in the district. “The latest techniques were taught to 22 professionals to improve the resilience of buildings during construction,” he said.

Rakesh, DDMA’s training coordinator, emphasized that the initiative is crucial for disaster management. “Ensuring building safety during earthquakes is essential. This training will improve construction quality locally and help prevent loss of life and property,” he noted.

Learning from past earthquakes in Japan, Nepal, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, the DDMA has developed a plan to strengthen construction in the state. Buildings and houses will be built using earthquake-resistant technology, and specialized training for construction workers has begun.

As part of this initiative, five professionals from each panchayat will be trained in seismic-resistant construction techniques. DDMA officials stated that construction workers in Kullu are receiving training in Seobagh, while those from Banjar are being trained at the Block Development Office.

This workshop marks a significant step towards safer construction practices, ensuring better disaster preparedness in earthquake-prone areas of the district.
