As per the CY Station, scammers are tricking the people by claiming that TRAI is going to disconnect your phone, making calls from FedEx about a package, posing as police officer and demanding Aadhaar Card details, resorting to 'digital arrest' and duping people by claiming that drugs have been discovered in some package meant for the victim or sent by the victim.
Additionally, scammers are also duping people by advising them to buying shares/ stock or cryptocurrency, promising to provide home-based work, informing about an emergency/ illness/accident of a dear one/relative/ friend and asking to send or to deposit money, claiming that someone asked them to send a particular amount to them, using AI voice clones and posing as near and dear ones and demanding help or luring people to press any button by claiming themselves to be a delivery person, etc.
In order to avoid getting scammed, people have been advised to immediately inform any such incident to the cyber cell by dialling toll free number 1930.
People have been advised to never answer any calls on video mode and to switch off the phone for some time and block the number.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), State CID Cybercrime Mohit Chawla, said these are some of the tricks that are currently being used by the scammers to dupe the people of their money. He said “Remember- no court/ police station/ govt investigation agency makes calls or informs you - they work on paper mode and there is a reason for this. Refrain from answering and sharing sensitive information to such callers.”
He said that these criminals thrive on individual’s greed and or fear. “Nothing is free and there is nothing like easy money or returns or once-in-a-lifetime deal,” he added.
