Cyber fraudsters are now scamming people by posing as CBI and police officials and extorting money from them. These fraudsters target victims via encrypted Whatsapp calls, through which they inform parents that their children have been arrested, thus evoking fear amongst them, and then extort money for bail and settlement.

To prevent people from falling into the trap, the HP police has advised people to ignore such calls, as law enforcers and government officials would never call to ask for money. People have also been advised to not to remit any money to the scammers or give out personal and banking information to these fraudsters.

DIG (Cybercrime) Mohit Chawla said such cases were increasing. He said several persons have been duped by such fraudsters claiming to be police officials, narcotics and custom officials. “People get carried away when the scammers mention a family member’s involvement and do not confirm the information regarding the same, and easily fall in into their trap,” he said. — TNS
