In a major relief to residents of the state capital, the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Ltd (SJPNL) will soon resume daily drinking water supply to the town, marking the end of water rationing that was started in summer season.

The SJPNL has already resumed daily water supply to the Chhota Shimla and New Shimla zones. It plans to provide daily supply to the rest of the areas in the coming days.

The supply to the town was severely affected during summer after water level in the lift schemes went down due to the hot weather and the lack of snowfall in winter.

With the beginning of the monsoon season, the water level in the supply schemes has risen due to which Shimla is receiving 43 to 44 MLD of water for the past few days with the exception on Friday when town got 39.37 MLD water.

SJPNL AGM (Water) PP Sharma said ample supply was being received from all six water schemes that catered to Shimla. He said if situation remained the same and there was no silt in the water schemes, the SJPNL would provide daily water across the town.

On Sunday, Shimla received 39.65 MLD water, including 22.20 MLD from Gumma, 8.91 MLD from Giri, 3.96 MLD from Koti Brandi, 3.06 MLD from Churot, 1.44 MLD from Chairh and 0.08 MLD Seog.

There are around 35,000 water consumers in the state’s capital, including 25,000 domestic and 10,000 commercial ones. Shimla requires around 45 MLD of water daily and 47 to 48 MLD water with the floating tourist population.
