Declare Himachal rains a national disaster: Cong prez

Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president and former MP Pratibha Singh on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the ongoing rain-induced calamity in Himachal Pradesh a national disaster, in line with the resolution passed unanimously during the monsoon session of the state Legislative Assembly. She also demanded a special financial package for the state.

In a press statement, Singh expressed concern over the widespread loss of life and property caused by incessant rains and landslides. Appealing to citizens to exercise utmost caution, she advised people to remain vigilant until the weather stabilises and the situation comes under control.

Recalling the PM’s oft-cited special connection with Himachal, which he calls his “second home,” Singh urged him to extend financial assistance to the state. She noted that the calamity has caused losses worth crores of rupees, with the reconstruction of roads, bridges and restoration of drinking water and power supply emerging as major challenges. “A special financial package is urgently required to rebuild the state’s damaged infrastructure,” she said.

Singh acknowledged that the state government is making relentless efforts with its limited resources to provide relief and carry out restoration work, but emphasised the need for full central support.

Calling upon Congress leaders and workers to stand by the affected communities, she said this was a time to help one another and move forward with unity. She also appealed to BJP leaders to cooperate with the state government in relief and rehabilitation efforts. “At such a time, politics must be set aside and every effort should be directed towards helping the people of Himachal,” she said.
