Dehri govt college overall champ in kayaking & canoeing tourney

The two-day state-level Inter-College Kayaking and Canoeing Water Sports Competition of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) concluded at the Regional Water Sports Centre at the Pong Lake in lower Kangra last evening. Host Wazir Ram Singh Government College, Dehri, in neighbouring Fatehpur subdivision clinched the overall championship trophies in both men and women categories.

The Dehri college won four gold medals and one silver medal in the men’s category and five gold medals in the women’s category and hence was declared the overall champion in the state-level event.

As per the final results, in the men’s category, Government College, Indora, was the first runner-up with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals while Government College, Ghumarwin (Bilaspur), bagged the second runner-up trophy with one gold and one silver medal.

In the women’s category, Government College, Rey, was the first runner-up with five silver medals while Government College, Bilaspur, was the second runner-up with three bronze medals. WRS Government College, Dehri, hosted the championship under the supervision of college principal Sachin Kumar, who also acted as the coordinator of the event. Team managers, technical officials from various colleges were present on the occasion.

Rakesh Walia, in-charge, Regional Water Sports Centre, Pong Lake, presided over the closing ceremony of the championship and honoured the winners. He said that the sports centre established at the Pong Lake in the lower hills of Kangra district offered a variety of water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing, water skiing and swimming. “The centre also provides hostel and rest house facilities for the participants. It is also organising water safety and rescue measures with three-tier water sports courses,” he added.
