The Bhawarna police today arrested a Delhi-based assistant radiologist for allegedly supplying heroin through a postal parcel to local youths. A case under the NDPS Act had already been registered at the Bhawarna police station in June, when the police had seized a parcel containing heroin from the local post office. The police had also arrested two persons, Alish Katoch (20) and Mayank Sharma, on whose names the parcels were received. The parcels containing heroin were dispatched from Dwarka, New Delhi.

Amit Sharma, DSP, Palampur, said during investigation, the accused stated that heroin had been sent by Baman Sharma, who was working as an assistant radiologist at a private hospital in Delhi, through postal parcels many times. “Two days ago, the police received a tip-off that Baman Sharma will visit his native village Mansimbal on Friday. Police teams were constituted to nab the accused, under the supervision of SHO Romesh Thakur. As soon as Baman Sharma arrived in his village, the police immediately took him into custody,” the DSP said. Baman Sharma would be produced in court in the afternoon.

The new modus operandi adopted by the drug peddlers to supply heroin through postal parcels has worried the Kangra police. Perhaps this was the first incident in the state when drugs reached Kangra through postal parcels. The police are making efforts to arrest the main supplier of heroin from Delhi. The police have directed the post offices and courier agencies to be careful while delivering parcels.
